Install the cover that was removed in the maintenance record ‘How to remove fuel tank cover’.
When removing and installing the cover, it catches on the fuel tank and is pushed to the left and right.
So, I wondered if I could reduce this burden as much as possible.
From this article you will know as follows.
- How to install grommet to secure the drain hose
- How to install the fuel tank cover
- How to install the fuel tank cover smoothly

2. How to install fuel tank cover (STEP 1-13)
Fixing drain hose
<Fixing drain hose>
During the work, I noticed that the grommet that holds the drain hose on the left side of the fuel tank sits on top of the rib.
Originally, the grommet was supposed to be fitted in the groove on the tank, which is the correct way to look at it.
This was also the case in the Haynes photo.
Grommets correctly fitted
To try it out, grommet was fitted into the fuel tank groove.
<From side>
The grommet will then deform, compressing the hose and narrowing the inner diameter.
<From top>
As expected, this does not make sense.
Maybe, the hole diameter in the tank is too small.
So, I ended up leaving it in the STEP 1 state.
Even in this state, the drain hose does not touch the tank.
And I feel that it is still functioning.
Washers
Now, I will start fitting the petrol tank cover.
<washers>
There are two washers.
So, pay attention to the position where they are fitted.
Left: Washers to be fitted on upper side of the cover
Right: Washers to be fitted on the underside of the cover
Put washer
<Put washer>
Put the washer on the right side of the photo in STEP 3 over the bolt securing the fuel tank.
Applying silicon grease
<Applying silicon grease>
Apply a thin layer of silicon grease to the fuel tank cover and the area where the fuel tank rubs.
I feel that this alone will reduce the amount of snagging on the cover.
I also applied it to the left side (front) of the photo, but the cover does not seem to touch this side. (This was unnecessary.)
Install fuel tank cover 1
<Install fuel tank cover 1>
- Lay a microfiber cloth over the steering bolt area.
- Remove the fuel tank cap.
Install fuel tank cover 2
<Install fuel tank cover 2>
Install the fuel tank cover.
You can see that silicon grease which was applied to the fuel tank is on the edges of the cover.
So, it must hit quite hard.
Install fuel tank cap
<Install fuel tank cap>
Once the cover is over the tank, quickly fit the fuel tank cap.
Install fuel tank cover 3
<Install fuel tank cover 3>
- Temporarily tighten the left and right screws on the seat side.
- With the fuel tank cover between the two sides, tighten the screws securing the left and right covers.
Install fuel tank cover 4
<Install fuel tank cover 4>
Tighten the cap nut on the steering side with the T-bar handle with socket.
Then tighten the screw on the seat side.

When tightened, it looks like this.
Install cap
<Install cap>
Install the cap on the end of the cap nut.
You can see the crack, as mentioned during removal.
I will replace it at some point.
Condition of installed fuel tank cover
<Condition of installed fuel tank cover>
I managed to put the fuel tank cover back on without breaking it.
To be honest, I don’t really want to remove and install the cover because of the strain it puts on it.
3. Summary
This section summarizes how to put the fuel tank cover on.
The same strain is placed on the cover as when removing it, so I applied silicon grease to reduce the strain as much as possible.
- Apply silicon grease to the tank to reduce cover snagging.
- Cure the steering head bolt with a microfiber cloth or similar to avoid scratching the cover.
- When fitting the cover, spread it slightly to the left and right.
